Christian Formation For Adults

The Adult Christian Formaton program meets weekly, September through June, in the parish hall, between the 8:00 and 10:15 services and covers a range of topics on spirituality and spiritual practice, theology, world religions, scripture, current events—and Bible Jeopardy!

In the past year, the book group has read and discussed the Rev. Barbara Taylor’s LeavingChurch and A Wing and a Prayer, a book of short essays by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori.

A newly formed Adult Christian Formation Committee is developing more adult education offerings, book club meetings, movie nights, quiet days, Lenten studies, and parenting classes.

Adult education offerings are posted here and in The Messenger.

Fall 2010 Adult Education Schedule:

Sept. 12 : Opening Day Breakfast

Sept. 19 : "Origins of the Bible" (Part 1). Presenter is John Rosania.

Inspired by holy men of God, and judged by prophets of God, the people of Israel recalled, retold, and recorded their experiences and aspirations. The resultant writings became the Hebrew Scriptures. Those who walked with Jesus recalled and recorded the events in His life and the transformating experiences that produced and nurtured the Christian Church. As these writings were gathered, they became the New Testiment.

Trace the history of the Bible from original texts to modern English translations. It's a story of faith and murder, betrayal and belief. Who would have thought the story of bringing the scripture into the English language would be so exciting?

To receive the most benefits and enjoyment from this two part mini Bible Learning Series, please BYOB (Bring your own Bible). Part 2 on November 7.

Sept. 26 : A General history of the Anglican Church. Presenter is Rob Riendeau.

Oct. 3 : History of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut. Presenter is Rob Riendeau.

Oct. 10 : Jeopardy! As is our custom, Jeopardy! will be easy but Double Jeopardy! will challenge your knowledge (and your hand-raising speed). Contact Beth Richards for categories for questions.

Oct. 17 : An update on the Activities and Projects of the Central Connecticut Deanery. Presenter is Don Muller.

The Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut is divided into fourteen geographic areas, called deaneries. Their original purpose was to streamline the flow of information from the diocesan to the local level. With email and other modes of communication, that purpose is less central, but deaneries remain involved in communication as well as many other activities. Join us as our deanery representative provides an update on the Central Connecticut Deanery and opportunities that deanery projects provide.

Oct. 24 : Parish-wide event. Stay tuned for details.

Oct. 31 : (Halloween) - All Saints and All Souls Day. Presenter is Quinton Johanson. This program will give a historical and current perspective of the day that follows All Hallow's (Saint's) Eve.
